Summer Theatre Introduction

REGISTRATION FOR THE INTRO CAMP IS NOW CLOSED

 

Led by veteran teacher and performer Dannielle Robertson, students will learn techniques in acting, movement, and voice—along with visual arts crafts and support imaginative exploration— that will give them confidence, develop motor skills, and teach them the excitement of being part of a live theatrical production.  Over the course of 5 days, we will give the students a fully-realized performance of a play for family and friends at the culmination of the camp. 

 

What:             A 5-day camp that will culminate in a production showcasing students’ talents

 

When:            June 10-14 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.  Students should bring a sack lunch.  Performance will be held at 1:00 PM Friday June 14.

Summer Theatre Exploration

 

Led by Wagon Wheel actor and director Andy Robinson, this camp is designed to challenge upper-elementary students to further develop their acting skills.  Over the course of 5 days, students will develop a theatrical piece to perform for family and friends at the culmination of the camp. 

 

What: 5 day camp that will culminate in a production showcasing students’ talents

 

When:  June 24-28 from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM (except for Thursday which ends at 1).  Students should bring a sack lunch.  Performance will be held at 2:00 PM Friday June 28.

Summer Theatre Workshop

 

Now in its 9th year of producing the highest quality student productions on our very own Wagon Wheel stage, the camp that brought to life such amazing shows as A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Bye Bye Birdie, Once on this Island, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Into the Woods, and last year’s HONK! is back with another spectacular show. Aimed at giving students the experience of professional theatre-making, this nine-day, fast-paced experience will bring students from rehearsal to curtain in a little more than a week.  Directed by Andy Robinson and Wagon Wheel favorite Kira Lace Hawkins.  

 

What:  a 9-day camp that culminates in a production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s classic comedic operetta The Pirates of Penzance.

 

When:  July 3-13 from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.  Students should bring a sack lunch.  Performance will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday July 13.

Scholarships are available for all programs.  Wagon Wheel Theatre believes that every child should have an opportunity to experience live theatre first-hand regardless of ability to pay.  To request consideration for a scholarship, please send an email to Will Dawson with information about your child’s experience level and your financial need. 

 

 

OUR PROFESSIONAL TEACHING STAFF:

 

Andy Robinson (SUMMER THEATRE EXPLORATION, SUMMER THEATRE WORKSHOP) has directed the Wagon Wheel Youth Theatre Programs for nine years. He holds a Masters from NYU in Educational Theatre and has taught theatre to grades 1-12 for over fifteen years in both New York City and Chicago.  He is currently Chair of the Department of Musical Theatre at the Chicago Academy for the Arts.  A long time Wagon Wheel actor, his favorite roles include the 2nd Gangster in Kiss Me, Kate, Captain Hook in Peter Pan, and the Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz.  Along with Ben Dicke, he directed Brighton Beach Memoirs, The Importance of Being Earnest, and Blithe Spirit on the Wagon Wheel mainstage.   Andy will be seen again onstage in Shrek this season, and he will be directing 9 to 5.

 

Danielle Robertson (SUMMER THEATRE INTRODUCTION) is a living history museum of Theatre, Television, and Film work.  In television, she has worked with Dean Martin, Carol Burnett, Laugh-In, appeared on “The Hollywood Palace Show,” and was a regular for on “The Beverly Hillbillies” as Helen Thompson.  Her film credits include My Fair Lady, Paint Your Wagon, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Oliver, and others.  She was also Amy on the national tour of Stephen Sondheim’s Company.  Danielle—though an accomplished director, scenic designer, props and costume builder, and actress—is really a teacher at heart.  She holds a PhD from University of California (Irvine) and has taught for over 30 years at all levels, from grade school to college. 

 

Kira Lace Hawkins (SUMMER THEATRE WORKSHOP) is originally from Anoka, Minnesota, and received a BA in Music and a BA in Theatre from St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN.  After graduating, Kira performed professionally in Minneapolis for three years. She then met her husband, Zach, and moved to his hometown of North Manchester, IN where they opened a community owned coffee shop and she directed at Manchester High School, Manchester College, and acted in community theatre in Wabash, North Manchester, and at the Wagon Wheel.  Previous credits at the Wheel include Glinda/Aunt Em in The Wizard of Oz, Paulette in Legally Blonde, and Nettie Fowler in Carousel.  Kira also had the pleasure of assisting with previous youth shows (Bye Bye Birdie, Once On This Island, and last season’s HONK!).  Kira earned her MFA in Acting at Penn State University.  She's thrilled to be back at the Wheel again this summer, and can't wait for another amazing youth program!
